In presentations Etienne describes this as a process of identity modulation, the way in which we negotiate our identity in a complex landscape where many practices and communities make claims to our accountability. This is part of the broader shift in the relationship between the individual and community, which has evolved from modes of belonging (Wenger 1998, chapter 8) to modes of identification.
