Location

Bellingham (Xwotqwem) is a university town of 90,000 on the beautiful Salish Sea, located on the traditional homelands of the Lummi and Nooksack peoples. Vancouver, British Columbia is 60 miles to the north, and Seattle is 90 miles south. The BeTreat will take place in the Underground Cafe in the student union of Western Washington University (516 High Street). Participants can enjoy views of the bay, mountains, and islands and walk the serene campus and trails in the adjacent arboretum. Travis looks forward to helping participants get to know Bellingham’s diverse cultures and activities and will host an evening homemade pizza party using his family’s earth oven.

Airports

The Bellingham International Airport (BLI) is small but convenient. It is served by Alaska Airline, Allegiant Air, and San Juan Air. Southwest Airlines now flies to Bellingham.

Visitors to Bellingham commonly fly into the Seattle/Tacoma Airport (SEA), a major airport 90 miles to the south, and then use the Bellair Shuttle to get to Bellingham.

Other options include Paine Field (PAE) in Everett, WA or Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in British Columbia.

Lodging

Good options that are convenient to the WWU campus include the Fairhaven Village Inn, Heliotrope Hotel and Four Points by Sheraton.

Travis says he would be happy to do an AirBnb site visit for any of the participants, if desired.

Things to do around the region:

This workshop is co-hosted by Travis Tennessen, who is the Interim Director, Center for Community Learning, Western Washington University. He and his team are the convener of a community for Community Engagement Fellows – a social learning program that bring educators together across boundaries. He joined BEtreats in 2017 and 2018.
